Fitness check

Before you get started on an exercise program, take a step back and conduct a fitness check on yourself. The first place to start is to know your body mass index (BMI), which tells you if you are at a healthy weight. From there, you can design a good exercise plan, which includes your fitness goals as well as an exercise program that will help you meet your objectives.

The first thing to do is decide what your fitness goals are and how will you know when you've achieved them. Do you want to lose inches around your waist or hips? Do you want to be able to run a mile or go for an all-day hike? Whatever your exercise and fitness goals are, make sure they are realistic. Do you have a healthy body image? Do you have realistic expectations? It is important to address these issues before you dive headlong or work your body too hard. Many people start a fitness program too enthusiastically and get sidelined by injury. You're in this for the long haul so start slow and be patient. Rest assured that you'll experience the benefits before long.

Another aspect of the fitness check is to decide what kind of exercise you would like to add to your exercise program. Be sure it's in line with your personal interests. Do you prefer being outdoors or indoors, team sports or solitary activities? Which part of your body are you targeting to improve, upper body strengths or cardiovascular fitness?

A fitness check will put you on the right rack to meet your exercise goals .
